O yes, in the evening Franziska and I always watched Dr Who together. It was the first time I worked on a book edit while the illustrator was sitting next door. Her husband Mike wrote a recipe for each plant AND Franziska Blinde, one of my Artists in Residence here at Volterra came to illustrate the book at my house. Then my daughter Anna translated it into German. I wrote this book in English so Tammi could read and comment and add her ideas. They’ll make Caspia go in search of ten plants, but she’ll find so much more on her adventures in the Green Kingdom. It is the story of ten letters in a drawer, written by a blind girl named Rosalinde to her sister Minna and of the riddles they contain. So this book tells the story of Caspia who has to spend a summer in Brooklyn, although she would prefer to stay with her friends. Non fiction? Fiction? I think it was a comment from her husband Chris that made us realize this should also be a story, as that’s what in a way we both are. It took Tammi and me quite a while to figure out what kind of book this should be. We became friends and decided to make a book together that would inspire the readers to take a closer look at Green Kingdom and to maybe make some of them fall in love with plants. I loved the way Tammi wrote about plants and she came to visit me. It all began when I read a book by Tammi Hartung, an ethno botanist and herb farmer from Colorado.
